Buliisa is a rural community located in the Buliisa District, in western Uganda, along the shores of Lake Albert. The community is widely known for its grassroots resistance and self-organization in response to large-scale oil extraction projects that have threatened land rights, livelihoods, and local ecosystems. Traditionally dependent on fishing, small-scale farming, and communal land use, the people of Buliisa have organized collectively to defend their territory, demand compensation, and assert community participation in decision-making processes affecting their land. Through local committees, alliances, and civic action, Buliisa represents a process of radical democracy rooted in commons defense, environmental justice, and community organizing in the face of extractivism.
