Can Batlló is a large former industrial complex located in the La Bordeta neighborhood of Barcelona that has been collectively reclaimed and self-managed by local residents since 2011. Following decades of abandonment and speculative urban planning, the community organized to occupy and transform the space into a network of commons governed through open assemblies. Decision-making is based on direct democracy, consensus, and collective responsibility, with working groups managing cultural, educational, social, and productive activities. Can Batlló functions as a living experiment in urban self-governance, where residents exercise direct control over land use, infrastructure, and community life outside of state or market logics.
