The Misak Indigenous People, also known as the Guambiano people, inhabit the Resguardo of Guambia in the department of Cauca, Colombia. They are widely recognized for their long-standing process of Indigenous self-government, cultural sovereignty, and defense of ancestral territory. Rooted in ancestral knowledge and collective land stewardship, the Misak have developed autonomous political institutions centered on community assemblies, traditional authorities, and participatory decision-making. Their struggle has focused on territorial recovery, cultural revitalization, education autonomy, and resistance to colonial and extractivist structures imposed by the state. The Misak experience represents a living process of radical democracy grounded in Indigenous cosmology, commons management, and decolonization.
