La ZAD de Notre-Dame-des-Landes is a territorially based autonomous zone in western France that emerged from resistance to the construction of an international airport near Nantes. Established through land occupation, collective farming, and direct action, the ZAD developed horizontal forms of self-governance based on assemblies, working groups, and shared stewardship of land and resources. The community experimented with commons-based living, collective decision-making, and non-capitalist social relations, becoming a major reference for radical democracy, anti-extractivism, and grassroots territorial autonomy in Europe.
